Borgo Scopeto, the origins
Borgo Scopeto, located in the Sienese Borough of Castelnuovo Berardenga, was known as from 1079, according to what is reported by an ancient document of that time, as a fortified settlement belonging to the cathedral of Siena. The sighting tower in stone built in the thirteenth century is an evidence of its warlike past. In 1300 the farm was donated to the Sienese noble family called Sozzini that carried out the first big transformation from a military building to a villa. In a short time, the farm became a thriving farm centre mainly devoted to vine and olive growing. In the sixteenth century, Borgo Scopeto was an important theological conference centre which agreed with the theories of the Reformation. For this reason, the Sozzini family was persecuted for a long time by the Inquisition. However, the property continued to grow concentrating on wine production and only recently it started to bottle its own wines. The first bottle of Chianti Classico with the Borgo Scopeto label dates back to 1990.
THE LAND, ITS FRUITS
The land, its fruits
The geological configuration of the vineyards of Borgo Scopeto, their exposure, as well as their altitude, but especially the strong variability in the short range, make this wine-growing area one of the best training places for expressing the best of sangiovese. Starting from the vineyards of Misciano, medium-textured with a balanced presence of skeletal material, passing from Cagliano where we can find in a few hundred meters from medium-textured to silty-sand without skeletal material, until we reach Fornacino where some hectares are characterised by the considerable presence of clay and closing with a sandy La Vittoria; the variability of these lands considerably expands the concept of the quality difference given already from the start by the targeted use of different clones of Sangiovese on as many different stock vines. The plants are trained with the system called “spurred cordon” and the density is equal to 6,000 plants per hectare on average. The vineyards are carefully looked after during the whole growth cycle. Nothing is left to chance. Each operation is strictly carried out by expert hands. Our philosophy is to define quality already from the beginning of the ripening phases, starting the harvest when the proper balance between technical ripeness and ripe phenolics is reached. Before picking the grapes by hand, they are field-selected in order to check the flawless clusters. The harvest period goes from mid September to the first week of October. In addition to the red vines, the Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes are also harvested for producing the “Vin Santo” (Holy wine).
THE CELLAR: TRADITION WITH INNOVATION
The cellar: tradition with innovation
In no other place of the farm, tradition and innovation perfectly combine as in the cellar. Here, the entire grapes are unloaded with special trolleys and submitted to soft-crushing. The capacity of the wine-making cellar exceeds 7,000 hectolitres and fermentation takes place in controlled-temperature stainless steel vats. Here, wine technology is completely at the service of the manual ability of man. The capacity of the ageing cellar is ca. 1,600 hectolitres. The type of woods used varies according to the type of wine. Borgo Scopeto, according to tradition, uses exclusively Slavonian durmast 30-hectolitre barrels for ageing the Chianti Classico D.O.C.G.. The “cru” Chianti Classico Riserva D.O.C.G. Vigna Misciano, is aged both in Slavonian durmast 30-hectolitres barrels and French durmast 500-litre casks. Ageing is more modern for Borgonero, our Supertuscan, that ages 24 months in French durmast 300-litre casks. The Vin Santo Chianti Classico D.O.C., dessert wine made of Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes, ages 48 months in traditional kegs. The scrupulous care in the vineyard is transferred to the cellar working. The result? All you have to do is to open a bottle of Borgo Scopeto and you will find all the care and attention of a ritual that is repeated year in year out.
“Podere Fornacino” farm holiday centre
Podere Fornacino is located in the heart of Chianti, inside the Borgo Scopeto farm estate: an old cottage completely renovated according to Tuscan traditions. The farm holiday centre, surrounded by vineyards and by age-old olive trees, has six flats elegantly furnished and with all mod and cons, such as satellite TV, fireplace, independent heating and free laundry. The flats are set in a dominating position, with a view over Siena. The facility puts at the guest’s disposal a marvellous swimming pool, open from May to September, the park of more than 6000 sqm, a barbecue and a wood oven in order to make their stay at Fornacino more pleasant. FROM THE NORTH: Motorway A1 Milan-Naples, towards Naples. Firenze Certosa Exit. Take the Firenze-Siena highway, towards Siena. Siena Nord Exit. Turn left at the crossing, towards Castellina in Chianti, continue for ca. 2 Km and turn right towards Vagliagli. After 5 Km you will reach Borgo Scopeto. FROM THE SOUTH: Motorway A1 Milan-Naples, towards Milan. Valdichiana Exit. Take the Siena-Bettolle highway, towards Siena. Continue on the Siena-Firenze highway, towards Florence. Siena Nord Exit. Turn left at the crossing, towards Castellina in Chianti, continue for ca. 2 Km and turn right towards Vagliagli. After 5 Km you will reach Borgo Scopeto.
